Introduction to PIM for Large Multicast Networks

Tuesday, June 10
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Education Sessions (Level 3)
W311EF
Presenters:
• Brian Retzlaff, Account Executive, Diversified
• Jeremy Laurenson, Distinguished Systems Engineer, Cisco

We've learned how to configure our networks for managing multicast traffic using IGMP Snooping and a Querier.  However there is another way to manage this traffic, Protocol Independent Multicast or PIM.  Often, audiovisual deployments try to avoid using PIM for good reason.  Sometimes, PIM can solve problems and when multicast traffic needs to be routed to different networks, PIM might be the right solution.

This session will differentiate between PIM and the "usual" way multicast traffic is managed.  It will introduce the main concepts of PIM and help identify what types of network equipment is required to run PIM.  The session will also focus on why PIM should not be used in most circumstances.

PIM is not the go to method for audiovisual multicast networks but it can be a tool in the belt.  Knowing when to suggest PIM can help improve conversations with the network managers.  This information, while not specific enough to teach configuration, will give participants the vocabulary and background to have a conversation about when or if to use PIM.

Note: Education Pass required to attend this session.

Using Network Filters, AV Over IP Meets Access Control Lists

Tuesday, June 10
2:30 - 3:30 PM
Education Sessions (Level 3)
W311EF
Presenters:
• Brian Retzlaff, Account Executive, Diversified
• Kalee Luke, Territory Sales Manager, Legrand AV

Most AV pros who work with networks know about filters and access control lists.  Few AV pros utilize them to keep their AV Over IP networks running smoothly.  These filters can make complex decisions about what traffic passes or gets blocked.  This session will demystify these seemingly complex ideas by helping participants understand why and how to utilize them.  There will be a focus on multicast-based filters.  Several real-world multicast addresses you should know will be identified and explained what they can do on the network.  The session will differentiate between ingress and egress filters, it will explain how to determine if a specific switch offers the filters you need, and it will help determine the unique differences between unicast and multicast filters.  For the more network inclined in the audience all of this refers to building appropriate access control lists for audiovisual networks.

Note: Education Pass required to attend this session.

Configuring Multicast Networks Hands-On

Thursday, June 12
8:30 - 10:30 AM
Education Sessions (Level 3)
W311EF
Presenters:
• Brian Retzlaff, Account Executive, Diversified
• Jeremy Laurenson, Distinguished Systems Engineer, Cisco

Many guides and videos are available to show AV professionals how to configure a network to support IGMP multicast but there are few options available to practice.  This hands-on session will focus on allowing small groups to configure a network to support multicast AV encoders and decoders.  Focus will be placed on the ways major AV products require minor differences in the configurations and often these different products are put on different VLANs.  Starting with a network switch with its default configuration, the participants will work in groups to support transport of the multicast traffic from encoders to decoders.

There are many different network switches with different methods for configuration.  This session will focus on a single, large, popular, network switch brand but simultaneously, there will be guidance on how other brands would accomplish similar settings.

By completion of this session, participants will be comfortable with configuring a simple single switch network to support the transport of multicast traffic.

Note: Education Pass required to attend this session.
